About the trip

Aiming to do a few laps through the beautiful adrenaline rush that is Dove Canyon on NYE. Number of laps will depend on group size and how much time we spend practicing complex riggins vs just jumping every feature.

Participants will either need some canyoning or white water experience, to be comfortable moving through the white water environment of the canyon. If you haven't canyoned before, get in touch with Nicko to work out whether this is the trip for you.

Aiming to get into the canyon ahead of the morning commercial tour group, which means those coming from Hobart will have a horribly early start time. But that means we'll be able to make the most of the long daylight to do a few runs. If you want to camp the night beforehand, there's convenient cheap camping at Gowrie Park, or free slightly more basic camping on Olivers Road.  Nicko and Jess will be coming up crack of dawn 31st, then staying in the north that night so if anyone is keen for another morning run through on New Year's Day, that'll be an option.

Dove is cold, even by Tas canyon standards. Commercial groups usually run >6mm neoprene arms and legs, and 10~12mm on the torso, and it's not because commercial punters are soft. Double up wetsuits or wear lots of thermals, and make sure to put some sacrificial boardshorts over the wetsuit, since there's going to be a lot of sliding and scrambling. Like rafting, make sure you're not wearing any cotton, and that your shoes will grip on wet rocks. Volleys or dedicated whitewater shoes. Normal runners/sneakers are a nightmare that'll have you slipping over the whole day, no fun for anyone. It's a good 30 minute walk from the carpark to the get-in, where we'll be stashing dry clothes and lunches. So make sure you're dry clothes are comfy for a bit of a jaunt.
