Guides Course 2023

Get excited for the 2023 Guides course!

Are you interested in fostering some club spirit and learning to guide a raft with the Uni Rafting Club? No prior rafting experience needed just a good attitude and some experience in water. You must be able to swim! 

This year the event will be spread over 3 sessions: 

14th September 6-10pm  ROPE SKILLS SESSION. This will cover using pulleys and all of the on river safety gear. 

Held at the Rafting Sheds, 131 Olinda Grove, Mount Nelson TAS 7007. 

18th September 6-10pm THEORY NIGHT. We'll discuss how to plan and run a trip, and talk about Hydrology (how to read water...).

Held at the TUSA board room on the Sandy Bay Campus, Churchil Avenue, Sandy Bay.

22-24th September WEEKEND ON RIVER. 

Spend the weekend learning to guide a raft from our Senior Guides. Meeting at the Sheds at 5:30pm on Friday the 22nd we will head out to a river, camp Friday and Saturday night returning to Hobart late Arvo on Sunday. The River location is TBD and willdepend on rainfall. 

Weekend on River: 

2 nights away. Camping may involve staying in a community hall (this will be confirmed closer to the date), otherwsie you will need to bring camping gear ie a tent, a good sleeping bag, sleeping mat, warm clothes, raincoat, camp chair, food, water, wine, beers, guitars etc... If you need something to cook on, bring it along, or organise with someone else to share a stove. If you only need to boil water, someone will help you out. Dinner will be provided on the Saturday Night 🍜

For rafting activities you will need to bring:

Thermals top and bottom top wear under wetsuit, 

Old runners to raft in 

Shoes for off-river

 

Cost: 

$25 to cover the fuel costs of senior guides and club volunteers who are giving their time to teach you. This cost will also go towards dinner on the Saturday night but all other meals and snacks are BYO. We will carpool to the river, please contribute fuel costs to your driver.
